Job Title: ROCU- Operations Team Investigator post (Detective Sergeant)

Rank: Detective Sergeant

Closing: 17/2/23

Interview:

The assessment process will take place during first two weeks of March.

MANAGEMENT VETTING / SECURITY CLEARANCE DESIGNATED POST

Applications are invited from Substantive Sergeants As per the posting’s principles, the expectation is that newly promoted officers that have taken up their post, cannot apply for any other roles until competency has been demonstrated in their new role and rank and this is applicable to all officers (both non NPPF WBA and NPPF WBA); This will be 12 months.

This opportunity is only open to serving officers from West Midlands, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and West Mercia Police Forces

About the role:

The aim of the ROCUWM is to reduce the impact and increase the disruption of serious and organised crime within the region and beyond.

We target those areas of criminality we believe pose the greatest regional threats to the people and businesses of the area we cover. Working alongside other UK law enforcement agencies and many other partners from both private and public sectors, ROCUWM will directly influence the capabilities of these groups, stifling and reducing their criminal activity.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a hardworking and professional team of officers in a fast paced area of policing, working regionally and with national and international law enforcement agencies.

ROCUWM is working to build the diversity of its team. We are keen to identify people from across the full spectrum of the police community who could play a significant role in tackling serious and organised crime. We greatly encourage applications from anyone who can increase the cultural competence and diverse skills of the team.

Operational teams currently operate from three sites across the Region, namely Stafford (North), Birmingham (Central) and West Mercia (South).

Applications are invited from accredited IMSC trained Detective Sergeants for a vacancy on the Central Investigation Team based in West Midlands.

As part of ROCU Operations Investigation Team, you will have primary responsibility for the investigation of the region’s most significant serious and organised criminality, using a range of overt and covert tactics in line with strategic priorities of ROCUWM.

You will support ‘’crime in action’’ incidents and be part of a team working on the kidnap and extortion on call rotas.

The post requires a significant amount of flexibility and occasionally involves short notice changes to working hours due to the nature of the role

Essential skills:

  • Accredited Detective Sergeant, having completed the IMSC (or equivalent programme) and have a proven background of investigatory experience involving complex crime investigations and covert tactics
  • Demonstrate and exhibit high standards of integrity and professionalism
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Effective leadership qualities commensurate with the competency values framework
  • Effective file building skills including disclosure principles and presenting complex information
  • Evidence of adapting to a new environment and absorbing complex matters quickly and efficiently
  • Knowledge of covert policing techniques
  • Knowledge of Regulation of investigatory powers act 2000 legislation, Investigatory Powers Act 2016, structure and Practices
  • Experience in the role of Case/Exhibits/Disclosure/Investigating Officer within a major investigation environment

Desirable knowledge and experience:

  • Experience of undertaking sensitive high profile enquiries with limited supervision
  • Working knowledge of the National Intelligence Model, together with the tasking and coordination process
  • Evidence of operating as a deputy senior investigating officer
  • Have an advanced and/or basic police driving grade.

Additional information:

  • The role requires the post holder to perform on call duties on a regional basis (approx. 7 times per month)
  • A willingness to travel and be flexible when required responding to call out at short notice
  • Taking account of individual circumstances, a willingness and flexibility to be available when required for call out at short notice

Interview:

The assessment process will take place during first two weeks of March.

West Midlands Police is a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level an organisation can achieve under the scheme run by the Department of Work and Pensions. As part of our commitment we operate a ‘Disability Confident Interview Scheme’ - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview.

It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.

Diversity and Inclusion Vision: Maximise the potential of people from all backgrounds through a culture of fairness and inclusion to deliver the best service for our communities"

Applicants from underrepresented groups should contact ROCU for additional information and support
