Job Description

Are you a veterinary surgeon, soon to graduate, looking to join a real family feel practice that value’s your development and work/life balance? We have a great opportunity for you at Glasgow Forge Vets4Pets.

We are looking for a new graduate veterinary surgeon to join our friendly, well-established, and sociable team. Our team is led by JVP and Veterinary Surgeon, Struan and is made up of 2 FT and 2 PT vets, 5 RVNs, 1 SVN, 1 Practice Manager and an experienced reception team.

Within our vet team we have vast amounts of experience, with 3 of our vets having been qualified 10+ years and the other being a more recent graduate. Struan is an advanced practitioner in small animal practice and is currently enrolled in a cardiology certificate, for which we have invested in a brand-new ultrasound, and another vet is about to embark on further training in soft tissue surgery, more specifically, BOAS surgery. We also have a high exotics caseload.

When taking this role, you will be enrolled on the vets4pets graduate scheme which will provide structured learning throughout your first few years in practice as well as the opportunity to build relationships with other members of the graduate program throughout the vets4pets network. Find out more here: https://www.vets4petscareers.com/our-graduate-programme/

In practice we will support you in consolidating this knowledge and applying it in practice both through varied case exposure and through the support of our experienced team. We’re also really keen for you to bring your learnings back to us so together we are providing the best care and growing in our knowledge as a team.

Working alongside our vet team are our highly valued nurses, of which 2 are clinical coaches as we are a nurse training practice. Most of our nurses and receptionists have been with the practice for many years as they enjoy the close-knit family feel of the practice, however, they are always welcoming to new team members and make them feel at home. Our nurses conduct their own consults most days of the week and undertake Schedule 3 procedures, enabling the vets to focus on their own consults and surgeries.

In this role we can accommodate both full or part time hours and offer flexibility around your shifts whether you are looking to do 4 longer days, 5 shorter days, or need to finish early some days, for example, for childcare- we can make your rota work for you. We are now closed on a Sunday meaning the 1 in 4 weekend rota covers Saturday’s (9am-5pm) only after which you will work reduced hours in the week to take that time back. Any additional overtime that is worked can be either paid or take as time in lieu. We arrange our diary so all our vets have regular breaks to catch up on notes, report results and any other admin, so generally, we finish on time. You will not be required to cover OOHs.

Aside from work, we love to socialise in our free time, with team nights out. We have team Whatsapp groups both for clinical discussions and support, and a separate one for general communication and/or socialising. In practice we also conduct monthly clinical and full team meetings to check in on all our team and ensure any problems are dealt with as a collective.

Glasgow Forge Vets4Pets is located just a short 10-minute drive outside of Glasgow City Centre, but also only 20 minutes from the countryside and the famous Loch Lomond, making it the ideal location for city and countryside lovers. The practice is located on a retail park with free parking. It is also on a major bus route, and the local train station is 10 minutes walk away.

We offer an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to:
  • A starting salary of £34k (pro rata) rising each year on the Graduate Program
  • 2-year programme, no financial/contractual tie-ins
  • Visa sponsorship for international candidates.
  • 5.6 weeks holiday per year, increasing to 6.6 weeks after 2 years service.
  • An extra day off on your birthday
  • Dedicated VetGDP advisor
  • Phased approach to sole charge duties
  • A 1 hour paid lunch break where all the clinical team break at the same time
  • Contributory Pension scheme
  • Access to wellbeing support and free membership of wellbring app
  • Access to grants for further development – incentive awarding grants of up to £1000 to support with on-going development beyond the Graduate Development Programme
  • Paid memberships (RCVS and VDS)
  • Generous CPD budget
  • Exclusive company discounts and rewards with up to 30% off at Pets at Home, PetPlan insurance discount,
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • And more…
