Full time (36.5 hours per week), fixed term contract for two years.

The Department of Economics is looking to appoint a Research Assistant with a good background in Economics. The individual will undertake research in order to contribute to and support work on a grant funded ERC project ‘Generating new Evidence to Address Violence Against Women: Realising Women’s Rights’.

The role includes conducting research, assisting with experiments and field work and carrying out all administrative duties connected to the grant.

The successful applicant will be expected to work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator for the grant, Professor Sonia Bhalotra. Excellent academic mentoring will be offered alongside opportunities to take part in research related activities.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

To undertake research and administrative tasks in order to support the work of Professor Sonia Bhalotra’s ERC grant ‘Generating new Evidence to Address Violence Against Women: Realising Women’s Rights’.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Principal Accountabilities

  • To undertake basic research, for example by preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of experiments and field work, accessing and merging data, developing questionnaires and conducting surveys.

  • Conduct literature and database searches.

  • Continue to update knowledge and develop skills.

  • Write up results of research for scientific papers and blogs for policy audiences.

Administration and Other Activities

  • To support the Project Lead with administrative tasks related to the research project.

  • Work within budget constraints.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • Good honours degree or equivalent.

  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills; and will be familiar with statistics and econometrics.

  • Familiarity with Stata, Excel and Qualtrics and the ability to use these packages to analyse and interpret data is a key requirement for the role.

  • The successful candidate will enjoy data analysis and will work independently to learn new analysis techniques.

  • The ability to work with data is a key requirement of the role; merging data, visualising data with graphs, web-scraping and programming.

  • The successful candidate will be an effective communicator both orally and in writing.

  • An understanding of equal opportunity issues as they may impact on areas of research content.
