Research Associate in Molecular Cell Engineering for Biopharmaceutical Production

We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering for someone with a passion for research looking to use their skills in cultivating microalgae to make an impact on sustainable manufacturing of the future.

An exciting position for a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with experience of mammalian gene expression technology is available to carry out research and development underpinning commercial manufacture of recombinant protein biopharmaceuticals by mammalian cells in culture. This project is funded by Lonza, a world leader in contract development and manufacturing services with industry-leading mammalian cell expression and cell line development technology platforms. Together, we aim to significantly improve Lonza’s protein production platform by creating new resources and solutions for cell line development and engineering.

The post-holder will work in partnership with bioinformaticians and cell engineers at Sheffield and Lonza to (i) create and validate a library of multi-component genetic vectors, (ii) test the ability of engineered cell lines to produce a variety of recombinant proteins, and (iii) assist in the drafting of patent applications and preparation of manuscripts for publication in leading journals. This is a fixed-term post for 36 months; the successful applicant will be working under the supervision of Professor David James and Dr. Adam Brown at Sheffield in collaboration with Dr. Bernadette Sweeney at Lonza.

We are looking for highly motivated independent researchers who have demonstrated their ability to perform and publish high quality research. You will possess a PhD in a biological science or bioengineering, have excellent molecular biology skills, and expertise in one or more of the following areas: gene transcription, mammalian cell culture, bioinformatic analysis, design and testing of DNA constructs. This post involves collaboration with an industrial partner and a wider team of researchers, and accordingly the candidate will have excellent communication and team-working skills. The successful candidate will have excellent opportunities to present research findings externally, and contribute to research publications.
