The joint medical school of the Universities of Hull and York, Hull York Medical School has a reputation as one of the UKs most exciting, contemporary schools.

Role

The Mortuary Manager (Hull) role is based primarily at the Medical School Anatomy Facilities at the University of Hull campus with occasional work at and travel to the University of York campus. The role provides a rare and unique opportunity to join a friendly, supportive, and motivated anatomy team consisting of specialist technicians and academics, and to have lead responsibility for the embalming of donated bodies for medical education, alongside the Mortuary Manager (York). The anatomy team facilitates the body donation programme for Hull York Medical School, with over three thousand prospective donors currently registered. The role holder will be the first point of contact for families dealing with a recent bereavement and requires the successful candidate to display discretion, empathy, and sensitivity, whilst being able to prioritise and make timely decisions. As a member of the anatomy team, the role holder will also support anatomy teaching and assessment, on the MBBS, MBBS with a Gateway year, and MSc programmes, anatomy short courses and other postgraduate learning activities. The role holder will manage the anatomy areas and facility infrastructure at the Hull site, acting as Health and Safety contact for this area. They will also have responsibility for ensuring compliance with COSHH regulations and the maintenance and servicing of essential services and installations, liaising with the Health and Safety departments and Estates services of both Universities, and with external contractors.

Skills, Experience & Qualification

The post is ideally suited to a conscientious individual with experience of embalming or postmortem and dealing sensitively with bereaved families. They should have experience of managing a laboratory or mortuary service and have an open and positive attitude whilst responding to changing priorities under pressure. The role is varied and unique and requires the role holder to be self-motivated and organised, and a dedicated and proven team player with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Applicants are expected to show a commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, and work in line with the School’s values of – everyone counts, pursuing excellence, socially responsible and collaborative. This includes undertaking mandatory equality and diversity training and adhering to the principles outlined in the UK Medical School’s Charter on So-Called ‘Conversion Therapy’ and the British Medical Association (BMA) racial harassment charter for medical schools.
