Job Purpose
To develop, over the period of 2 years, the skills and experience necessary to become a Contracts Manager and Qualified Solicitor.
To assist Head of Legal and the Contract Managers within the University's Contracts Team to prepare, negotiate, and finalise research agreements, services agreements, MTAs, NDAs and other contracts with other academic institutions and government bodies, commercial entities, and individuals.
To assist the Contracts Team in its aim to ensure maximum benefit to the University whilst appropriately managing risk and intellectual property issues, and ensuring compliance with legislation and University policies.
To assist the Contracts Team to provide high quality contractual and legal advice to academic and other college staff, to support applications for contract funding, and to assist in post-award contract management.
In performing this role, the role holder will be expected to take responsibility for personal learning and development and to fulfil, with support from the University, the requirements set down by the Law Society of Scotland for successful completion of PEAT 2 including completion of the minimum required level of Trainee Continuing Professional Development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To assist the Contracts Team to provide specialist and professional advice to academics and college staff in respect of research agreements, services agreements, MTAs, NDAs and other contracts.
2. To assist Head of Legal and Contract Managers to prepare, negotiate and finalise contracts [both terms and conditions and price], ensuring effective due diligence, compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations, and alignment with University policies and strategies.
3. Where required, to assist and advise in respect of the post-award management and enforcement of contracts, to ensure efficient post award management by assisting members of the Contracts Team to provide clear instructions and guidance on contract terms and deliverables, including specific invoicing instructions to ensure that maximum funds are recovered from funders.
4. To recommend and implement process and system improvements and policy changes.
5. To ensure maintenance of accurate project data in the University's Research System.
6. To take responsibility for personal learning and development and to fulfil, with the support of the University, the requirements set down by the Law Society of Scotland for Professional Education and Training 2 [PEAT 2] including attendance at the required minimum level of Trainee Continuing Professional Development [TCPD].
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 LL.B.
A2 DPLP awarded within the last 2 years [unless concession granted by Law Society of Scotland to enter PEAT 2 e.g. by way of extension to DPLP validity].

Desirable:
F1 Experience of working in an office and/or legal environment.
F2 Experience of providing contractual and/or legal advice. F3 Experience of working in or with the Higher Education sector.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 4, £22,197 - £24,715 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for the period of the Traineeship.
