The Interventional Radiology team are looking for registered nurses and ODPs to join our team, to support the expansion of the services we provide. We carry out both Neuro and non-neuro interventions, and so require a skilled and dedicated team to ensure optimum patient care.

No two days are the same in interventional radiology and the role is extremely varied. In the morning you might scrub in to assist with a lifesaving stroke thrombectomy, and then by the afternoon you could be administering conscious sedation and providing care and reassurance to a patient undergoing a targeted chemotherapy treatment. The nursing team covers interventions in ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI as well as our three dedicated interventional rooms.

Team work, flexibility and enthusiasm for delivering the best for our patients is a must. Our planned days work can change in a second if we receive an emergency patient, so the ability to adapt is crucial. We receive referrals from just about every other speciality in the hospital so we come into contact with a wide variety of patients with a diverse range of needs.

Visits to the department are highly welcomed, as well as shadowing the nursing team to understand the daily work. We can also support newly qualified nurses with preceptorship.

‘Relocation package may be available’.

  • Acting as a scrub practitioner to assist with procedures
  • Circulating in procedure rooms and US and CT to assist with interventions
  • Attending MRI and nuclear medicine when a registered nurse is required to supervise studies
  • Administering procedural sedation to patients when required (training will be provided)
  • Nursing care and reassurance to patients attending to IR procedures
  • Assessing patients pre procedure to ensure fitness and suitability for their IR procedures
  • Reporting and documenting relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals within the MDT.
  • To join the on-call rota after a period of supervision/training
Our core hours of work are currently seven days a week, 8am-8pm. Due to the life and limb saving nature of some of our procedures we operate an on-call rota outside these hours. It is required to join this rota after an induction and training period and an ability to wear our PPE (lead aprons) during procedures and sometime for 3-4 hours at a time is a must. No experience is necessary - just an enthusiasm to learn - we will train you on the rest!

Interventional Radiology is a positive and progressive environment consisting of a multi-disciplinary team of Nurses, ODPs, Radiographers and Doctors. No two days are the same in and we treat a wide variety of patients from all specialities across the hospital, including inpatients, outpatients and day cases.

We have a supportive team of Band 6 nurses who each have a designated team they are responsible for. In line with the Trusts People Plan we have daily huddles where all staff members are encouraged to speak up, and regular improvement huddles where any member of the team can suggest a new idea for the department and this is discussed and taken forward.

Our unit is currently undergoing refurbishment works to provide us with modern facilities both in the IR rooms and the wider department. A new IR day case unit is include as part of Derriford’s future hospital plans – so there will be opportunities to diversify the nurse and ODP role even further and to influence how the unit is set up and run in the future.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
  • The Imaging Department performs a large number of imaging investigations and interventions per annum in a variety of clinical settings such as interventional radiology, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear medicine and MRI
  • An increasing amount of these are complex procedures being performed on patients from all areas of the Trust and can be acutely unwell, therefore a highly skilled nursing workforce is required
  • The nursing team participate in an on call rota, training is provided prior to going onto this rota. This means the nursing team can be contacted out of hours by the radiologist to assist in any emergency procedures as part of Major Trauma Centre
  • Regularly assumes responsibility for the area on a day-to-day basis, utilising knowledge of Trust standards, policies and procedures
  • To provide leadership and act as role model for other staff members
  • Contributes to the management of risk, both clinical and financial
  • Provides high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period
  • Reporting and documenting all relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team
  • Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader ensuring efficient allocation of staff and resources
