An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse to join the adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) service at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). Working as an ACHD specialist nurse at UHCW will give the post holder the opportunity to work with a varied and complex group of cardiology patients as part of a multidisciplinary team You will provide clinical advice, education and support to patients in an outpatient and inpatient setting as well as via a dedicated email and telephone advice and support line. In this role you will develop skills such as clinical assessment and management of patient caseload. Education and support specific to ACHD will be planned to build your knowledge in this area.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse who is passionate about caring for our specialised cohort of patients who are at varying stages of their ACHD journey. The post holder will have experience of working with patients in a cardiac setting. Previous experience of working with patients with congenital heart disease is desirable, but not essential as training and support will be given.

You will need to be able to work collaboratively as part of a team, but also autonomously and be able to prioritise your own time and patient caseload.

You will be assessing patients, planning and coordinating care. You will have, or be willing to study for, a Health Assessment qualification.

The role requires you to adapt to a number of scenarios and be able to use your clinical knowledge and assessment in a variety of ways, ensuring our patients have access to expert care and advice from the ACHD team throughout their life.

You will participate in education for nurses and other professionals. You will need excellent communication and IT skills.

Patient education and empowerment are important components of the ACHD service, as an ACHD specialist nurse you will need to deliver holistic care and work well with patients and their families, building life-long collaborative relationships. This will include some challenging personal and family dynamics and also patients with learning difficulties.

  • Practice in accordance with the Trusts core principles and values, and current national
  • Act as an advocate for patients with congenital heart disease, ensuring a patient centred approach to the delivery of care and to meet the standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
  • Participate in running cardiac clinics, both virtually and face to face, in Coventry.
  • Respond to email and telephone advice line for patients, their carer’s and other clinicians on clinical and lifestyle issues and preventing inappropriate admissions to hospital.
  • Manage a patient caseload within this speciality whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Work towards demonstrating skills, including clinical history taking, cardiac assessment and physiological examination.
  • To attend and participate in local and regional multidisciplinary meetings.
  • To ensure that patients have access to appropriate educational literature or information in order for them to make informed choices about their ongoing care.
  • Promote and deliver high quality clinical care and assist in the development of the specialist service through use of evidence-based practice and clinical standards
