About us

The mission of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health.

About the role

The Lewis Spitz Surgeon Scientist PhD programme, jointly funded by the NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre (GOSH BRC) and the GOSH Charity aims to develop future surgeon scientist leaders with excellence in translational research in paediatric health. We are looking for exceptional and motivated surgical trainees passionate about research, who have a strong academic and clinical track record, and who wish to pursue a clinical academic career path. Candidates for this Surgeon Scientist PhD Research Fellowship will register for a 3-year PhD at GOS-ICH and will apply for an honorary contract at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. With help from the course organisers, the successful candidate will select a research topic from a portfolio of potential PhD projects. Each project will be jointly supervised by a senior member of academic staff at GOS-ICH, and a consultant surgeon at GOSH. Some projects may have additional co-supervisors from GOSH BRC’s Paediatric Excellence Initiative partner organisations. Full portfolio of available projects can be found on our website: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/child-health/research/developmental-biology-and-cancer/lewis-spitz-surgeon-scientist-phd-programme-projects This role is funded for 36 months in the first instance.
