About us

The Centre for Languages & International Education is a centre of excellence for teaching and learning at Institute of Education (IOE) specialising in academic communication, pedagogy and student support from Pre-degree up to Doctoral level across all UCL Faculties. At pre-undergraduate and pre-graduate level, in close liaison with UCL Faculties, CLIE develops international students’ academic, linguistic and study skills across a portfolio of courses to enable successful academic transition between diverse education systems. CLIE also offers a range of enterprise activities, for example overseas consultancies, partnerships, specialist summer courses and CPD evening courses. CLIE is BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes) accredited.


The UPCSE is a pre-undergraduate programme for international students, who are studying Biology in conjunction with another science subject, usually Chemistry or Maths, and English for Academic Purposes. Many of our students continue their undergraduate studies at UCL.

About the role

CLIE wishes to employ a College Teaching Fellow on the UPCSE Biology module on permanent full-time basis salaried at UCL Grade 7 spine point 33 (£43,792 including London allowance).

Reporting the UPC Biology Subject Coordinator and UPC Subject Coordinator, Teaching Fellows provide up to 18 contact hours per week, which includes face-to-face teaching, online teaching when required and office hours. They provide high quality teaching to develop students’ academic language, academic subject knowledge and application, laboratory and fieldwork skills. Teaching fellows are expected to provide rigorous well designed formative and summative assessment and feedback marking promptly to students. They also work collaboratively with colleagues within the UPC course, to support course development and support student experience.

About you

The successful candidate will have a degree in an Biology related field, recognised teaching qualification and at least A-level (or equivalent) teaching experience in the subject area. Candidates must be experienced in teaching international students, working as a part of teaching team and supporting students for autonomous learning. They will have excellent written and oral English language and communication skills, as well as strong inter-personal skills and confidence in use of ICT.

You must be available to start work in September 2023.
