The Rivers Trust is a leading environmental charity and the umbrella body of The Rivers Trust movement, comprising over 60 independent local charities. Our vision is for wild, healthy, natural rivers, valued by all. We are at a critical point in our history as we expand to deliver projects to protect and replenish this critical part of the natural environment, and our research and expertise is now needed more urgently than ever as water supply and quality move up the public agenda.

We are looking for a proactive Finance Assistant to join our Finance Team and play an important role in ensuring the smooth running of our financial processes as the organisation continues to grow.

There will be a wide range of responsibilities including pension scheme administration and general team support.

This is a brand new, part-time role of 25 hours per week due to expansion of the organisation, to start as possible. We are anticipating a working pattern of five hours per day, Monday to Friday, probably between 10am and 3pm although this is subject to negotiation. It could work well for someone looking to combine their job around school runs, although during busy periods such as financial year-end or to help provide cover for colleagues on holiday we may ask you to work extra hours, for which time back can be claimed.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be based in our Stoke Climsland office three days per week and home based two days per week. Computer and mobile phone to be supplied by the Rivers Trust. Familiarity with Sage accounting software and Microsoft Office would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be joining a welcoming and committed team of people, including a mixture of long-serving and new employees. We are looking for an individual who is motivated by providing excellent finance support to help advance the cause of the Rivers Trust. This is a great opportunity for a finance assistant role which contributes to the improvement and restoration of the natural water environment.

The salary for the job is £17,707 per year (for working 25 hours per week) based on Grade 3 £26,560 FTE

The job responsibilities are:

  • Administration of The Rivers Trust Group Pension Scheme and associated life assurance scheme, for which full training will be provided. Prior knowledge of pension schemes would be an advantage. (Approximately 10 hours per week.)
  • Providing support where necessary to other members of the Finance Team which may include processing of the post, entering sales invoices, purchase invoices and purchase orders, completion of forms, organising travel arrangements and general finance administration tasks.

You will expected to follow all Rivers Trust policies, including GDPR, EDI and Health & Safety and contribute to an inclusive and respectful working culture.

To apply, please send your CV or apply via LinkedIn by visiting https://careers.theriverstrust.org, including a covering letter to show how you meet the following criteria:

  • Good knowledge of finance administration, office systems and Sage would be an advantage
  • An understanding of pension administration. (Please note this is supported with contributions from an independent financial advisor.)
  • Experience of sales and purchase ledgers and bank reconciliations
  • Familiar with Microsoft packages, especially Excel
  • Excellent numeracy
  • Ability to suggest improvements and efficiencies to systems
  • Excellent attention to detail and well-organised
  • Collaborative approach to other departments and colleagues
  • Ability to work well individually or as part of a team
  • Ability to work effectively remotely as well as in an open plan office
  • Access to own transport and living within commutable distance to Stoke Climsland, near Plymouth.
