Orthopaedics (Trauma) – RVI

Anatomy Demonstrator – On-call will be in HpB & Transplantation

Paediatric Surgery - RVI

General Surgery – RVI

Colorectal - FH

If you are interested in pursuing a surgical career, and wish to gain exposure to, and experience in, a wide range of high-quality surgical placements, then you should apply today. This post would be ideal for those interested in, but currently unsuccessful in, gaining a Core Surgical Training placement.

• Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.
• Attend operating lists for both emergency and elective cases.
• Attend outpatient clinics.
• Take part in rostered emergency work.
• Formulate and implement management plans for patients within sphere of competence in both acute and long-term situation
• Clinical history and examination.
• Diagnostic testing.
• Arrange investigations for patients and ensure results available in a timely manner.
• Clinical skills (blood gases, lumbar puncture, central lines, surgical technique).
• Responsible for effective communication and team working with other members of the clinical team to ensure the planned management for each patient is carried out.
• Undertake referrals to other clinical teams and ensure effective communication of the underlying problem.
• Thorough communication with patients and their relatives.
• Undertake a key role in planning and implementing effective discharge, including any communication with the relevant community care team.
• Participate in teaching of undergraduate students from all the health care professions.
• Ensure medical students have opportunity to meet their own learning outcomes.
• Supervise and assist F1 doctors in the day-to-day management of in-patients.
• Participate fully in the educational programme and ensure that appraisal and feedback occurs in a timely manner.
• Use the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Project Website/Portfolio.

The Newcastle Surgical Rotations are aimed at individuals interested in pursuing a surgical career, and wishing to gain exposure to, and experience in, a wide range of high-quality surgical placements. All posts include a 4-month Anatomy Demonstration attachment in Newcastle University Medical School.

Whilst our surgical rotations are not currently accredited training posts, content is organised to mirror Core Surgical Training. The post holders will be supervised in the same way as individuals undertaking Core Surgical Training, and will have their competence progression reviewed at the end of their year in post. All posts are initially for a period of 12 months, but with the possibility of extension up to 24 months subject to adequate progression. There will be career counselling available from experienced surgeons who will be able to advise about the pros and cons of undertaking a second year. Where a second year is offered, the Surgical Rotation Co-ordinator will organise this, providing candidates with exposure to different specialties with the aim to mirror experience offered in Core Surgical Training. Post holders will also have access to opportunities for development within the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre (NSTC).
