You will play a fundamental role in the development and delivery of the Healthy Child Programme across Newcastle. This includes assessing child development, in both home and community settings. Supporting the positive mental health of children, young people and families living in Newcastle maintaining a child-centred focus

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to train as a SCPHN Health visitor or School Nurse. You will be joining the 0-19 Service in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme across Newcastle, and we would love to hear from you.

We are looking for high calibre qualified nurses/midwives who can demonstrate that they want to be at the forefront of leading the public health agenda, early intervention, and a willingness to work collaboratively with partner agencies.
  • 37 Hours 30 Minutes/Week
As an Apprentice you will be an adult learner, this requires you to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, resilient, and dedicated to the role. You will have a keen interest in public health and as a qualified SCPHN you will be leading the Healthy Child Programme.

You will have a passion for public health and improving outcomes for Children and families in Newcastle, collaborating with partner agencies to promote early intervention.

We are looking for nurses and midwives who can demonstrate an understanding of holistic assessment and the wider determinants of health.

You should have excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other agencies and as part of a skill-mixed team as well as able to work independently.

  • To complete the full time higher Apprenticeship in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme (18 months apprenticeship route) Post Graduate Diploma with MSc option
  • To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Practitioner programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with the Trust and University regulations
  • To ensure that by the end of the course the successful candidate has developed the knowledge base, skills and competencies to work as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within their particular area speciality.
  • To work with the Specialist Community Practice Supervisors and Assessors to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice which will be assessed by the allocated Specialist Community Practice Assessor
  • With the support of the Specialist Community Practice Supervisor to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation. To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they pertain to chosen pathway
  • To develop/build on skills of team leadership and caseload management which engages enables and empowers others.
  • To work within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust policies as they pertain to the relevant clinical setting and employee responsibilities.
  • To work within the NMC code.
The higher apprenticeship programme runs for 18 months, (50 % in an academic setting and 50% in clinical practice) in collaboration with Northumbria University. Your training will include both Practice settings, where you will work in an integrated 0-19 Service with highly skilled Practice Supervisors and Assessors who will support you in practice and Northumbria University where you will be supported with the academic programme.

Please note–
  • Annual leave is set by Northumbria University for the duration of the course and is not changeable.
  • Successful applicants will be expected to be fully committed to complete the course.
  • Travel from your home to your base and to Northumbria University will be at your own cost.
  • Following interview, successful candidates will be required to complete a separate university application.
  • Please state clearly in your application if you are applying for Health Visiting or School Nursing.
Application Process

Interviews will be held week commencing 24.4.23 with members of our Clinical and Educational Team and the Course Leaders form Northumbria University. Shortlisted applicants will be advised of the date and times of interview via e-mail.

You will be paid at Band 5/6 depending on current band.

Please note we cannot consider your application if you do not have current NMC registration and a full driving licence and access to a car.
