Are you looking to kickstart your career? Would you like the opportunity to gain practical skills, achieve a formal Degree Level qualification and earn at the same time?

Starting in September 2023, as part of the Council’s Annual Apprenticeship Programme we have an amazing career development opportunity to gain work experience whilst studying towards a Degree qualification. As this is an apprenticeship opportunity, your course fees will be funded and so you will accrue no University fees or student debt and will also be earning throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.

You will undertake aBSc(Hons) Environmental Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship (Accredited by the CIEH) with Leeds Beckett University. You can find out more about the Apprenticeship Degree here: www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/degree-apprenticeship-courses/environmental-health/

As a Trainee Environmental Health Officer, you will gain valuable work experience supporting our residents to live and work in safe healthy environments. Working alongside experienced colleagues in the Environmental Health Team you will spend your time out in the community working with local businesses and members of the public developing your knowledge and skills in carrying out a range of inspections and providing education on Food Safety, Animal Welfare, and Environmental Protection and much more.

We take pride in being a great place to work, where staff are valued, trusted and supported to make a positive contribution at work. We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference, to serve the people of our borough, and who is committed to their own development.

This role will require some out of hours work on evenings and weekends and the ability to or willingness to work towards independent travel around the borough (via car, bus or other modes of transport) would be essential.

To be shortlisted for interview you will need to demonstrate in your application:

· A minimum of 112 UCAS points or equivalent expected or already obtained

· GCSE (or equivalent) English Language, Maths and a Science subject at Grade C / 4 or above

· Recent voluntary/personal experience in a relevant regulated environment e.g. Food Safety & Hygiene, Housing/Property Management, Public Health

· Good negotiating, influencing and persuading skills

· Effective listening, written and spoken communications skills

· Effective IT Skills

· Ability to analyse, interpret and present data and solve problems in a logical manner

· Commitment to own personal and professional development

· A team player who is not afraid to try something new

PLEASE NOTE: You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in the same or similar subject.

In addition to fully funding your University Degree and travel costs, we offer a competitive salary, generous annual leave, local government pension and access to a number of other benefits like discounts at high street and online retailers, health & wellbeing support including access to mental health wellbeing support and physiotherapy services.

And that’s not all – We also offer a degree of flexible working with the opportunity of working from home in line with the Council’s Flexible Working Policy, following completion of a 6 month probationary period.
