If you have experience sailing as a Second Engineer, with knowledge of diesel electric propulsion systems and hold a Class 1 (Motor) Unlimited certificate with up to date STCW certification, then we want to hear from you.

Marine Scotland is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland. It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas. The Marine Patrol Vessels are involved in monitoring compliance with International, UK and National rules and regulations of licensed activities in the marine environment around Scotland and out to 200 miles and beyond when required. This includes enforcing UK, International fisheries laws and regulations. This is intended to assist the conservation of fish stocks and in creating the conditions necessary for the existence of a modern and sustainable sea fishing industry.

We are currently recruiting for three Second Engineer’s to work on board our compliance and science vessels.

The Marine Protection Vessels are Minna, Jura and Hirta. Minna is 47 metres in length and both Jura and Hirta are 84 metres in length. These vessels carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. Marine Scotland Compliance also operate a number of smaller independent craft within the inshore protection programme. MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively. Research cruises vary in length, but generally are no more than 22 days. All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.

Job description

  • Assisting in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel’s machinery;
  • Carrying out planned maintenance and running repairs on the vessel’s machinery.
  • Preparation and monitoring of main machinery and auxiliary equipment;
  • Testing and maintaining the monitoring system for unmanned operation;
  • UMS duties on main and auxiliary machinery whilst vessel is at sea and in port;
  • Supervise the Third Engineer and Engine room rating.
  • Assist the C/E to ensure that safety procedures are adhered to
  • Assist the C/E in compiling refit specifications
  • Deputise for the Chief Engineer as and when required

Person specification

  • Recent experience of being a sea going Second Engineer, and can demonstrate the ability to work to high standards in all marine engineering disciplines.
  • Proven experience of using maintenance databases to carrying out planned maintenance and running repairs to ensure the vessel is maintained to Flag and Class Standards by ensuring adherence to the Safety Management System.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience of leading a small team, whilst being able to work with a large degree of autonomy.
  • Excellent people management skills including a proven track record of providing clear direction to staff
