REACH Human Rights and Advocacy Educator

REACH Advocacy are looking for a new full time Human Rights and Advocacy Educator to join the REACH team. As a Human Rights and Advocacy Educator your goal is to empower and equip people with the knowledge and skills they need to claim and defend their rights.

This is a unique role that entails huge responsibility of ensuring individuals/ communities understand their human rights and organisations (Duty Bearers) know of their legal duty to uphold. There are aspects of advocacy, development, and education and training roles that the successful candidate will have to possess as well as a passion for social justice for the most marginalised in our society.

Educators will have knowledge about methods of facilitating education such as andragogy/ pedagogy and will demonstrate empathy and sensitivity towards matters of diversity and inclusion. Human Rights and Advocacy Educators will aim to create participatory learning environments where everyone feels safe to express themselves, learn and thrive. As an Educator, you will design learning experiences, lesson plans, online courses, educational materials and facilitate workshops and training sessions to a variety of different audiences.

REACH is currently in partnership with Scottish Government Drug Policy Unit and Public Health Scotland to deliver a co- production project to tackle health inequalities which disproportionately affect marginalised groups. Within the UK, and specifically Scotland, these health inequalities are contributing to unprecedented numbers of drug related deaths which the Scottish Government have regarded as a national health crisis.

In order to mitigate drug deaths and related harms, REACH and Public Health Scotland have strategized a co-production project to disseminate education and awareness of the new Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Standards within a wider Human Rights Based Approach to treatment and care.

As Human Rights and Advocacy Educator, you will assist the current team in the facilitation of this project and will contribute to the design and delivery of awareness workshops on a Human Rights Based Approach and our REACH Advocacy Practice Award (SCQF Level 7) (accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)).

REACH Advocacy ultimately aim to address health inequalities through pathways of education and training to upskill individuals on human rights and advocacy.

Relevant experience

• To design and deliver teaching modules, course materials and content effectively disseminating the Reach Advocacy Practice Award (SCQF Level 7) HNC level of academic standard to candidates.
• Effectively work with Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP) and Integrated Joint Boards (IJB) across Scotland to deliver the Award within their locality.
• To design and deliver human rights based workshops to participants representing human rights, substance use disorder, mental health and other related fields.
• Deliver to a cross-population of participants includes lived and living experience individuals, family and carer groups, front line staff, managers, civil servants, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders.
• Utilise our SQA Approved Advocacy Practice Award as a vehicle for delivering human rights and social justice skills, directly to the people and groups experiencing marginalisation. This comes in at (SCQF Level 7).
• To coordinate and participate in meetings and present REACH Advocacy outputs with relevant stakeholders, funders and commissioning bodies.
• To collect and evaluate both qualitative and quantitative data
• To maintain SQA candidate and Assessor Standardisation and Quality Assurance Systems.
• To tutor, assess and verify candidate work to SCQF (Level 7) standard.
• To respect and maintain the values outlined in the Employment Handbook, Code of Conduct and Verifier and Assessor Policy Framework.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development during employment period with the organisation.
• To undertake non-descript work where necessary to fulfil the needs of organisational goals agreed (i.e., funding applications, report and proposal writing, research, marketing etc.)
• Travel and overnight stays across a variety of locations in Scotland (Covid permitting).

Essential Qualities

• Experience of delivering and evaluating learning activities, workshops, and programmes with the ability to deliver independently.
• Minimum of HNC Qualification.
• Experience in Quality Assurance and Standardisation processes in the workplace.
• Effective oral and written communication skills in one-to-one and group formats.
• Report writing and referencing.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Be able to work away from home and have a flexible approach to the working week.
• Effective use of I.T. software including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams and Zoom
• Maintain cultural awareness, acceptance and respect within all aspects of the role.
• Experience and proven record of working with marginalised groups and professionals.

• Awareness of Civil Rights groups, Advocacy, The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, The Human Rights Act (1998), The Equalities Act (2010), The Patient Bill of Rights Scotland Act (2011) and the Fairer Scotland Duty, Part 1 of the Equalities Act (2018).
• Commitment to maintaining policies and legislation governing SQA Accredited Training Centres.
• Commitment to integrate National Occupation Standards for Learning and Development into day-to-day practice.
• Full Driving license
• Ability to work within a range of organisational settings and different working environments.
• Working knowledge and experience of Advocacy Practice and or Social Justice Activism.

In addition, applicants would be required to empathise with the aims and objectives of REACH, work as part of the REACH Advocacy service, and participate fully in the wider work of the organisation.

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

Salary: £33,000.00 per year
