An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Network Engineer to join the IT team within Norwich City Council. We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic individual who can support our business strategy and provide continued development of the IT support function.

As a Network Engineer, you will report to the Infrastructure, Security & Support Manager and will support the Infrastructure Teams by being responsible for the maintenance of the network equipment, including firewalls, switches and routers and the ongoing support functions including systems monitoring, diagnostics and troubleshooting across the council.

Typical activities will include:

  • Proactive operational support for the local area network which includes liaising with the hardware supplier
  • Liaising with the wide area network provider to ensure uninterrupted service and to oversee any new circuit provision and decommissions
  • Operational support for the WiFi network and the connection to the Public Services Network
  • Firewall management – configuration, monitoring, alerting following the change approval process and IT best practice
  • Network Security – ensuring vulnerabilities are removed (patched or configured) and maintain a secure environment
  • Carrying out service requests – activation of LAN ports, opening firewall ports etc
  • Network design – working with the Infrastructure, Security & Support Manager on new technologies
  • Project work as required
  • Analysing and responding to unusual behaviour, escalating appropriately
  • Ensuring security coverage and efficiency
  • Working to maintain regulatory requirements through audit remediation / support, vulnerability scans, penetration testing and remediation where appropriate

The post holder will help drive a culture of IT best practice in everything that we do across the Council by providing relevant support, advice, and guidance and to monitor compliance with audits, IT health checks and current IT cyber best practice requirements.

Due to the technical nature of the role, previous experience of Cisco and Palo Alto network and firewalls and a demonstrable understanding of enterprise level technical IT infrastructure engineering is essential.

On occasions out of hours work will be required to support the organisation therefore flexibility with working hours is needed.
