Post No. SSCF0092 - Youth Justice Officer

Newport Youth Justice Service continues to progress with its transformation, improving practice and interventions with young people and their families who use the service. In so doing, the service aims to reduce offending and re-offending.

The Youth Justice Service is a multi-agency team, that includes a leadership team, social workers, probation officers, youth justice workers, CAMHS nurse, substance misuse worker, speech and language therapist and business support. The team is based within the Civic Centre, however, a flexible approach including home and office working is supported.

A fantastic opportunity has opened for an enthusiastic, child focused Youth Justice Officer. The post holder will have lead responsibility for a number of areas of practice, including case management of a variety of cases from prevention through to statutory court orders. We are looking for a committed and experienced practitioner who is proactive in offering support and being available for children who present with significant safety and wellbeing concerns. An excellent understanding of safeguarding knowledge, legilsation and practice will be vital.

To help us take the service forward we are seeking someone with experience of working with young people, ideally in a youth justice setting/or criminal justice practice and with court experience. You will be a qualified social worker, or with an equivalent qualification in a related field, with strengths in working in collaboration with a range of partners and thinking outside of the box to support children. Being a positive advocate for young people will be an intrinsic expectation of the role.

You will have lead responsibility for an area of identified practice development within the service, agreed with the leadership team and for supporting team practice that promotes trauma informed and child first approaches, in line with the Welsh Government Youth Justice Blueprint.

You will also be expected to provide shadowing opportunities for unqualified staff, students and volunteers. A Welsh speaker would be an advantage but is not essential.

Applicants must have up to date knowledge of youth justice work, and other relevant legislation and guidance.

You must be willing to work flexible hours as the team provides support, when it is required to fulfil the objective of the plan even if this is outside traditional office hours.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Services Check (DBS).
