About the Role

Engineering Technician - Richborough/ Kent

Electricity interconnectors are the perfect tool to deliver a more secure and more affordable energy system for GB consumers, while playing a key role in the UK’s journey to Net Zero by 2050. Along with our partners, we build the interconnectors that enable the exchange of renewable energy between Britain and its neighbouring countries.

As our Engineering Technician, you will be on the frontline of the electricity industry ensuring the day-to-day safe and reliable operation of the Nemo Link Interconnector between Belgium and the UK. You will join a 24//7 team managing real time operations from the control room and play a pivotal role in delivering maintenance work onsite.

What you'll be getting up to

You’ll act as the first line of response, monitoring alarms and carrying out initial investigations and performing emergency response activities. You will perform routine checks (both electrical and mechanical) of site assets such as recording the number of HVAC circuit breaker operations, checking that emergency lighting is fully functional and checking fire system emergency call points. You will also perform minor maintenance tasks on site assets, such as replacing a fan belt on an air conditioning system, taking oil samples and performing fault finding and Maintenance duties on a range of electrical and electronic equipment, including contactors relays and PLC’s.

You will carry out routine inspections and checks, such as visual inspections of equipment, site perimeter walks and ensuring that inspection and maintenance records are captured on the asset management system. You will also conduct remote switching on equipment on both the UK and Belgian sides of the interconnector. And enact isolations on high voltage equipment once authorised.

You will work on a Monday – Friday 37 hours a week and be part of an on-call Rota.

About You

A team player with strong communication skills, able to concisely communicate technical issues with a range of contractors and control room staff both in the UK and Belgium.

You will ideally have experience in the power industry or in a control room environment and an understanding of HV electrical assets. Experience of (and previous authorisation under) HV Safety Rules would be an advantage, as would a background in industrial maintenance with previous fault finding experience and knowledge of PLC systems.

You will possess keen analytical skills and be able to use common IT software suites (such as MS Office).

A qualification or equivalent to City & Guilds in an Electrical / Electronic discipline, NVQ4 or HNC (preferably in an electrical discipline but mechanical is acceptable) is desirable.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At National Grid Interconnectors, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. So, if you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What's in it for you?

  • A competitive salary of £40,000 - £50,000 depending on experience
  • An annual bonus based on personal and company performance
  • 25 days annual leave (increasing to 26 after two years’ service) plus eight statutory days
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long as it’s relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
