Senior Biomedical Scientist

An opportunity has arisen to join the Willink laboratory as an Senior Biomedical Scientist in the Metabolites & Newborning screening section. The post is full time working Monday to Friday job share will be considered. The Willink Biochemical Genetics laboratory has a national and international reputation as a centre specialising in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with rare inherited metabolic disorders, particularly the lysosomal storage disorders. The laboratory has close links with the clinical service and therefore laboratory staff are able to see how their work contributes to the care of these patients.

The Willink Biochemical Genetics laboratory is part of the Genomic Diagnostics Laboratory and offers a highly specialised biochemical diagnostic service, primarily serving Manchester and the North West region, but also receives many referrals from throughout the UK and overseas. The laboratory provides a wide range of biochemical tests for the diagnosis and screening of rare inherited metabolic diseases, including regional screening for approximately 60,000 newborns per year for 7 specific disorders.

This Senior Biomedical Scientist will be based in Metabolites section. This section provides a wide range of metabolic tests. The post hold will be expected to learn newborn screening, participate in authorisation and the Saturday out of hours rota. You are expected to have metabolic experience, practical experience in various chromatography techniques and manual techniques would be of advantage, but training will be provided on the job.

Applicants should already be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist, or have relevant biochemical genetic experience completed portfolio submission and pending outcome for HCPC registration as BMS. An accredited MSc degree in Clinical Biochemistry, or the equivalent that demonstrate knowledge in specialised biochemical genetics procedures acquired through short courses/ongoing specialist training and experience to master's level is essential. You should have good communication skills, be able to work well in a team, remain calm under pressure, and be able to take initiative and prioritise workload. The work requires consistent attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
