Phlebotomist

We would like to appoint an enthusiastic, experienced phlebotomist to join our team of nurses and HCAs.

Applicants should possess the appropriate phlebotomy qualifications. Candidates should have computing/keyboard skills and be able to work as part of a team and on their own initiative.

Excellent patient service and patient relationship skills, excellent communication skills and a confident manner, common sense, a willingness to learn and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential attributes of any applicants.

Experience in General Practice would be advantageous but is not essential.

The post offered is part time (school hours available) working 25 hours per week, working across our 3 sites providing a phlebotomy service (currently booked appointments) for our patients.

Phlebotomist Job Description

REPORTS TO: Nurse Team Leader

HOURS: Part time

Job Summary

• The post holder will provide a general phlebotomy service for the Practice
• The post holder may be asked to undertake other administrative duties from time to time.
• The post holder will maintain patient confidentiality and will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Practice Nurse and within Practice Guidelines and Protocols at all times.

Clinical Duties

• To provide a sessional phlebotomy service for patients at times and on days to be agreed.
• To ensure that laboratory samples are correctly labelled and sent to the laboratory promptly.
• To record on the practice clinical computer system all patient encounters using templates.
• To maintain adequate stocks of medical supplies required to perform phlebotomy duties
• To undertake CPR training and other training relating to the phlebotomy service as required.
• To be responsible for the re-stocking of all clinical areas and maintaining a stock rotation system.
• To participate in the induction programme of staff new to the practice

General Duties

• To function as an integral part of the Primary Health Care Team.
• To attend relevant clinical meetings as required.
• To have knowledge of and act at all times within the boundaries of Health and Safety legislation and Data Protection Acts.
• To report immediately to a member of the clinical staff or the Business Manager any acts of omission or error to safeguard the interest of the patient.

Health & Safety:

The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others’ health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy and Infection Control policy, to include (but not limited to):

• Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines
• Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
• Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
• Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
• Reporting potential risks identified
• Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal
• Spillage control procedures, management and training

• Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work
• Participate in audit where appropriate
