About the opportunity

The UK Nuclear area within Jacobs provide engineering design, construction, planning, support, survey, design-build, project management and/or program management for our Nuclear Industry clients. With more than fifty years of experience across the complete nuclear asset lifecycle, we support client delivery and the associated infrastructure requirements at every stage of a project.

The Barrow Site Redevelopment Programme (SRP) was commissioned by BAE Systems Submarines in 2011 as part of the wider Dreadnought Programme of works. It is a complex integrated infrastructure programme with multiple diverse projects on a live manufacturing site, with further complexity added by nuclear licencing requirements. The projects follow the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 8-stage plan of work, from strategic definition to use. The programme seeks an investment greater than £1bn, marking the largest investment on the shipyard site since 1986.

The Design Substantiation Report Author (DSRA) is appointed by the Facility Chief Engineer, to meet the requirements of the Area Project Manager (Nuclear), responsible Engineering Manager and the Nuclear Governance Manager. The DSRA is to support the project in accordance with the Site Redevelopment Programme (SRP) Lifecycle Management (LCM) process and all related BAE Systems Submarines processes.

The role can be discharged through flexible working arrangements, with occasional visits to the Barrow site. T&S will be considered on a case-by-case basis for site based activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the responsible Engineering Manager, and support the Project Manager in the timely production of Design Substantiation Reports (DSRs) and design change and safety case amendment documentation associated with the substantiation of a Class 1 nuclear crane.
  • Support the production and ongoing management of overarching nuclear safety strategy papers.
  • Update existing Design Substantiation Report's (DSRs) as assigned, including management of internal stakeholder, Independent Technical Assessment (ITA), Independent Peer Review (IPR) and committee reviews, including support in addressing comments raised.
  • Support with periodic engagement with external regulators (ONR / DNSR) as required, including support in responding to regulatory queries.
  • Prepare required Design Change applications on behalf of the responsible Engineering Manager.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
  • SC clearance
  • Hold a degree or equivalent qualification in a suitable engineering or science subject
  • Good communication skills, build and maintain effective relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and to be proactive
  • Relevant and demonstrable experience in the field of mechanical handling
