An exciting opportunity has arisen for a trainee Biomedical Scientist to join our team. Working alongside Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical Support Workers within the Cellular Pathology Department to ensure the provision of a high quality, timely and cost-efficient services.

The post-holder will be working towards completion of the IBMS registration portfolio in order to gain registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • To perform both routine and specialist tasks covering a variety of equipment and manual techniques.
  • To ensure that equipment is properly maintained on a day to day basis and operated in accordance with laboratory and manufacturers SOPs.
  • The documentation of specimens, including entry of computerised records.
  • The macroscopic description and transfer of category A specimens, such as small biopsies.
  • The embedding and orientation of tissue samples selected for diagnostic evaluation requiring significant knowledge and experience of histological and anatomical structure.
  • The production of slides for microscopic examination, requiring extensive hand and eye coordination to produce high quality diagnostic sections using complex, skilled microtomy and handling techniques.
  • To greet and manage andrology patients and their partners, including sensitive conversations, clinical information and decisions.

  • To participate in the routine work of all sections within the department to provide our users with accurate and timely results.
  • The handling, processing and disposal of histological and cytological material.
  • The preparation of complex stains, working solutions and reagents in order to perform routine and specialised histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical investigations.
  • To undertake investigations arising from UKNEQAS participation, including cellular pathology techniques, immunohistochemistry and andrology.
  • Work with others to ensure a safe, efficient and effective service.
  • To undertake routine and specialised histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical investigations on diagnostic tissue specimens in accordance with Standard Operational Procedures.
  • To have precise pipetting skills where accuracy and precision are required.
  • To ensure that all tasks are performed in accordance with current Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and regulations to ensure a high quality service at all times.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times relating to patients, staff and the Trust in line with departmental and Trust policies.
  • To adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and to treat with discretion, avoiding disclosure to unauthorised individuals, all confidential and other information acquired.
  • To liaise with all other pathology staff and other members of staff within the Trust at an appropriate level to ensure high standards of communication and cooperation.
  • To be conversant with the use of the pathology IT system and report any problems to either senior staff or the IT helpdesk.
  • To work within the Trust and departmental safety policies and report any hazards to the departmental safety representative or senior staff.
  • To make positive efforts to promote your own personal safety and that of others.
  • Regular telephone and face to face contact with andrology patients and their partners.
  • To monitor the quality and accuracy of the results generated with the aim of providing a high quality diagnostic service to facilitate improved patient care. The post holder must have the knowledge and experience to interpret Internal Quality Control (IQC) results and take appropriate actions where failures occur and to report to senior staff any deviation from the quality control guidelines.
  • Training to be provided by senior laboratory and medical staff.
  • Attendance at organised training courses when appropriate.
  • To fully participate in the Personal Development Plan (PDP) review and appraisal system.
  • To keep up to date with developments in the field and participate in CPD as required.
