Job description
How would you like to work for an organisation that strives to improve the environment, is inclusive and values your views?

We are looking for Environment Officers to join our West Midlands Waste Regulation Teams that serve the environment and diverse communities of Central England.
You will regulate waste management sites other agricultural/land management activities across a range of urban and rural sites, all of which may impact the surrounding environment. You will be part of our customer-facing frontline teams working directly to create a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment. The role includes providing companies and businesses with advice and guidance on how to minimise their environmental impact, conducting site inspections, taking enforcement action where relevant and managing pollution incidents. No two days are the same, it’s a great way to start and develop your career as an environmental regulator.

This role will also include Incident Response.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
We cover industrial and rural areas, and have offices across the Midlands including Stafford. We are keen to hear from candidates that can cover the south of our patch, based at our offices at Tewkesbury and Kidderminster.

Our priorities and outcomes;

  • Tackling poor performing waste sites;
  • Reducing the risk of waste fires;
  • Providing incident response;

We offer a full training package supported by a team of highly skilled and experienced waste regulators.
Experience/skills required
You will have the minimum of an A Level in a relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience. A degree in a scientific or environmental subject is desirable, although not essential. You may be a new graduate or looking for a change of career. Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment and making a difference.

Whilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, it’s much less important to us than your ability to demonstrate the key skills/qualities we’re looking for:

  • passionate about the environment and willing to learn about environmental regulation and enforcement
  • proactive, organised and able to prioritise your workload
  • can handle confrontational people
  • good communicator - can adapt style to suit others/situation
  • able to work within a team
  • IT/computer literate
  • enjoy working both outdoors and in an office environment/from home
Contact and additional information
Training to attain full competency will take approximately 18 months and at this assessed stage, pay then increases to £29, 706.

You will be given training in an incident role so you can support the Environment Agency in its duties as a Category 1 responder.

We are fully committed to building an inclusive and diverse environment which reflects the communities we serve and where everyone can be their authentic self. We welcome applications regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity or marital status.
