Assistant Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented horticulturist to join a stunning private estate based in Hampshire on a full-time permanent basis. This position will suit an experienced Assistant Gardener looking to work within a large and diverse garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.

The property that borders the New Forest, boasts a rich history dating back to the 11th century. The estate has been the residence for the family for the past 6 years and went through extensive renovations upon purchase, including a wide range of brand-new garden tools and machinery. The 25-acre gardens contain many elements including superbly landscaped formal lawns, herbaceous borders, a Victorian walled garden growing a variety of fruit and vegetable for the main household. There are multiple flowerbeds, including many roses, boxed hedges, a large glasshouse growing mostly geraniums for the garden, an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, perennials, and annuals. In addition to the garden setting there is mature woodland, spring fed marsh gardens and a delightful natural duck pond. Also on site is a significant equestrian complex including a dressage arena, stabling with eight loose boxes, tack room, a floodlit outdoor arena and six substantial water fed paddocks.

Working alongside a Head Gardener, suitable applicants will ideally possess academic horticultural qualifications and experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, and excellent plant identification and management skills. Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is desired, including chemical spray certificates and chainsaw operation. Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals. This is a family run estate therefore discretion is required at all times.

Working hours are Monday to Friday with flexible hours depending on the season. The principles are in residence July and August, and therefore additional hours are required during this time. An offer to the successful candidate will be based on reference checks.
