GROUNDS KEEPER APPRENTICE

The grounds keeper apprentice role offers a great opportunity for someone looking for a career in grounds maintenance and management. We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in maintaining sports pitches within a high-quality Estate. Job Title: Grounds Keeper Apprentice

Location: Emanuel School, SW11 1HS, and Blagdon’s Sports Ground,

Beverley Way, New Malden KT3 4PU

Job Purpose: Working with the head grounds keeper to undertake the maintenance of the school grounds including all sports pitch renovation, maintenance and preparation. To provide high quality playing surfaces for rugby, cricket, athletics and multi-use synthetic surfaces. To ensure all routine tasks are undertaken as described and records are completed accurately and in full. To constantly assess and report on the condition of the estate and act upon urgent needs to ensure a safe environment for all.

Reporting to: Head Grounds Keeper

Hours: 07.00 to 16.00 (including meal breaks) Monday to Friday.

Grounds staff will at times required to work weekends, public holidays and other non-core hours as required.

Salary: This post will be paid at the appropriate minimum wage for the circumstances of the Apprentice, moving to £25,000 following successfully completing the apprenticeship

Study: The postholder will be given 0.2FTE (equivalent to 1 day per week) remission from duties to allow them to complete the qualification of Sports Turf Operative L2.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

a. Assist in undertaking preparation and maintenance work on a range of sports facilities and amenity surfaces as directed by the Head Grounds Keeper. b. Assist in undertaking all preparatory and cultivation work to maintain safe, high quality playing surfaces. c. Assist in undertaking minor construction and landscaping work. d. Assist in the set up all sports pitches or amenity surfaces for use.

e. Assist in maintaining other areas of the grounds and gardens to the standard specified by the Head Grounds Keeper.

f. Operate grounds equipment and vehicles as required for grounds maintenance operations if over 18 years of age and following training.

g. Assist in ensuring vehicles and equipment used are regularly maintained in accordance with routine operating requirements.

h. Monitor the use of consumable items and spares and request for their replenishment as necessary.

i. Ensure the safe use, storage and disposal of chemicals, pesticides and other similar substances.

j. Ensure work area is kept safe, clean, tidy and secure at all times.

k. Make recommendations to the Head Grounds Keeper regarding improved work systems.

l. Adhering to all aspects of Health and Safety regulations (including heating, safety, fire precautions and site cleanliness) and promptly reporting any hazards.

m. Participating in risk assessments and implementing procedures to reduce risk.

n. Working collaboratively with the estates management team and all other school stakeholders effectively and appropriately.

o. Complying with all legislative requirements and reasonable requests made by the estates management team.

p. Seeking support and development as required to meet the requirements of the role to add further value to the estates team and department’s overall performance.

q. Undertaking any other duties as required.

r. To comply with relevant Emanuel policies and procedures, including all safeguarding and health and safety procedures, at all times.
