Local Unit & Position Description:
The Fleet in Service (FiS) service line covers both Ships in Operation and Offshore Units in Operation where the Scotland FiS team demonstrates daily passion and engagement on both segments. The Offshore Units in Operation is a division of DNV Maritime dealing with floating offshore units which includes the oil and gas floating units and deeply engaged in the future of ocean space, aiming to influence and enhance operational efficiency for wind farm renewable and large-scale offshore fish customers.

Do you have a passion for the maritime industry, especially in the future of the floating offshore units? Then we are looking to join us as Surveyor for Fleet in Service, based in Aberdeen, Scotland. You will become a member of a highly qualified and enthusiastic Offshore FiS team, a top-tier Offshore Classification hub. The team constantly is engaged with offshore industry customers, which includes oil field operators, international fleet operators , drilling contractors, wind turbine service companies and oil majors. The fleet attended by Scotland includes everything from local fishing vessels to multi-million pound floating production Units and state of the art deep water drilling units.

Due to the nature of our business and clients, the position requires a candidate who can apply and interpret DNV rules and international standards in a competent and common-sense manner whilst maintaining an adequate level of compliance and safety. The role will require a strong safety mindset and commitment to attend offshore units in location, on a non-rota basis.

Once qualified the candidate will work autonomously at client locations supported by local network of surveyors and DNVs technical helpdesk. Remote technical meetings are held each morning to support surveyors working on location.
Whilst the candidate may have detailed technical knowledge in specific disciplines. The role requires a basic competency across all safety critical equipment as well as production, drilling plants and station keeping. Deep training in such disciplines will be provided as required.
Position Qualifications:

  • Conduct all activities in a safe manner with due regard for own safety and safety of others.
  • Strong commitment with environmental protection and energy efficiency.
  • Inspection and classification onboard of Offshore Units, wind farm support vessels and ocean-going Ships for compliance with DNV Rules for Classification, statutory requirements, international and the UK Standards. This includes inspection of structures and equipment, witnessing testing, audit of procedures and review of documentation.
  • Verification of offshore units in accordance with UK safety Case legislation.
  • Report all survey activities in DNVs proprietary software and when required, in Microsoft Office packages.
  • Liaison with ship and unit crew and management to facilitate the execution of the required survey scopes.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of customers’ business, processes, designs, developments, and documentation.
  • Takes responsibility for own competence and career development within the DNV competency framework and ensure that the appropriate competencies are gained and are kept up to date.
  • Assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal / external feedback as appropriate.
  • Be a lighthouse for the costumers and colleagues, providing assertive advice and guidance in areas of expertise.
  • Manage own time to meet the demands of the survey workload.

Candidate requirements:

  • Master or Bachelor’s degree in engineering (i.e. Naval Architecture, Maritime, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering) or Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner or Engineer Class I - Motor).
  • Alternatively, candidates with the offshore industrial experience may be considered with minimum five years' experience with at least 2 years in a senior technical role
  • Experiences in electrical and control systems, management system auditing are advantageous.
  • Physical abilities necessary to perform regular functions of the job, such as climbing pilot ladders, tank inspections, crew boat launches, voyage surveys. As the role will require work in offshore installations, the candidate should be physically capable of completing OPITO offshore survival training and medical.
  • Flexibility to work offshore and outside normal working hours.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and within the West Europe region.
  • Good communication skills in the English language, both verbal and in writing.
  • Be independent, self-organized team player with a positive customer-oriented mindset.
  • Asks for and acts on feedback to learn and improve.
  • Holds a valid UK driver’s license.
