Mental Health Counselor

Job Summary:
The Mental Health Counselor will counsel individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health. The Mental Health Counselor will help individuals deal with thoughts of suicide; addictions and substance abuse; family, parenting, and marital problems; stress management; problems with self-esteem; and issues associated with mental and emotional health.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Counsels clients and patients, individually and in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes. Maintains confidentiality of records relating to clients’ treatment.
• Guides clients in the development of skills and strategies to deal with their problems. Encourages clients to express their feelings and to discuss what is happening in their lives and helps them develop insight into themselves and their relationships.
• Collects information about clients through interviews, observations, and tests. Prepares and maintains treatment records and reports.
• Evaluates clients’ physical or mental condition based on review of client information. Develops and implements treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge. Acts as a client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
• Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
• Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, and cultures and their history and origins.

Education and Experience:

• A Masters’ degree in psychology, counseling or a related field required. Doctorate’s degree preferred.
• State Credentials with Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) or Board of Psychology (BOP) as LCSW, LPCC, LMFT or Clinical Psychologist, required.
• CA Sex Offender Management Board Certification at the Apprentice, Associate or Independent Level, preferred.
• Must be able to pass background checks, willing to take a CA live scan, and annual tuberculosis test.

Knowledge, Relevant Skills and Abilities

• The ideal candidate will have training and experience in Forensic Psychology and some experience working with sex offenders in an evidence-based treatment program (SOTP).
• A commitment to ending sexual violence, and ability to work collaboratively on a high performance team of similarly dedicated professionals are important attributes for successful candidates.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and flexibility and focus are critical skills for this work environment.
• Must be able to demonstrate competency in providing group and individual psychotherapy sessions, facilitate a curriculum-based treatment program, and experience in administration and interpretation of psychological testing along with proficiency in diagnosis, assessments, and treatment plan development and updating.

Enhanced Skills

• Bilingually fluent in Spanish with Minimum Professional Proficiency.
• Certified SARATSO (State Authorized Risk Assessment Tool for Sex Offenders) Scorer on the Level of Service/Case management inventory (LS/CMI), Static-99R & Stable-2007/Acute-2007.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
