This exciting role to work within the Respiratory Physiology department to train as an apprentice physiologist under the Healthcare Science Apprenticeship Programme. The successful candidate will be making a commitment to study both within working and home during the duration of the apprenticeship.

The apprentice will work as part of a multi- disciplinary team and provide a key role caring and supporting individuals during their time with Respiratory Physiology department.

This role will be supervised by a qualified physiologist. The apprentice will work as part of a multi- disciplinary team and provide a key role in caring and supporting individuals during their time in Diagnostics.

The apprentice must cover units in both cardiac and respiratory science. Apprentices would need to become competent in the following procedures: spirometry, 12 Lead ECG recording, capillary blood gas measurements, pulse oximetry, blood pressure measurements and venepuncture.

Perform routine spirometry on all patients attending the department.

To have a basic understanding of ECG and spirometry interpretation following a structured in house course or a recognised external course.

To undertake QA assured spirometry and basic lung function testing

Prepare patients for exercise testing according to the department’s guidelines and after checking the patient’s details.

Assist the senior physiologist during more complex lung function testing or CPAP therapy

To fit and download inpatient and outpatient sleep study monitors

To set patients up on CPAP providing full instructions

To support with responding to voicemails and troubleshooting CPAP problems

Administer basic life support when needed and other duties as required by the arrest team.

1. To work part of a team responsible for providing efficient diagnostic physiology services to West Middlesex University Hospital
2. Make a commitment to study both within working and home during the duration of the apprenticeship
3. Attend all tutorials, virtual and webinars- completing e-learning as instructed by the university.
4. Make a commitment to attend mandatory blocks of training
5. Attend tutorials and teaching events arranged by the Clinical Imaging department
6. Attend regular tutorials with your clinical advisor.
7. Perform a range of physiological measurements as detailed within the apprenticeship programme and within the department.
8. Take part in audits
9. To ensure that the Health and Safety at Work Act and other national, trust and local policies are practices are understood and adhered to in respect to staff, patients and members of the public.
10. Work within your competencies
11. Report any faults or issues in line with the department processes.
12. Being able to plan and successfully undertake academic parts of the apprenticeship whilst achieving high clinical competencies.
13. To undertake studying both within clinical practice and at home.
14. Prioritising tasks under the supervision of a registered practitioner. Aid in making the department work more effectively.
15. Attend departmental staff meeting.
16. The post holder will be required to actively participate in a periodic professional development review, in accordance with Trust guidelines.
17. Use equipment safely and instructed.
18. Ensure safe levels of stock are in stock and ordering when agreed. 19. Training other members of staff/ students in induction
20. Support HCA and work with them.
21. Use of the hospital IT systems
22. Attend mandatory trust training.
