You may wish to liaise with HEE prior to the interview date or apply for an OOPT before the interview (you can always withdraw your application if you are not appointed to the teaching fellow post).

The post holder has a key role in facilitating undergraduate educational activities within CNWL but also more widely within the Year 5 Psychiatry course. The post offers extensive teaching opportunities and responsibilities. The post holder will develop their undergraduate education and teaching administration skills, working closely with CNWL’s Director of Clinical Studies and ICSM’s Year 5 Course Leader for Psychiatry.

The post is solely an education post and there is no clinical placement that forms part of the post.

Undergraduate Clinical Studies (CNWL) is responsible for delivering clinical placements in Psychiatry for Year 5 students at Imperial College School of Medicine (ICSM). CNWL currently host approximately 200 ICSM medical students a year, who complete their psychiatry placements across 4 borough-based sectors: Brent; Harrow; Hillingdon and Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster. Placements last 6 weeks each; there are 6 rotations of placements per academic year. Our placement sites are identified by their community bases but all have inpatient bases aligned to them - they are Park Royal Centre for MH, Northwick Park, Hillingdon Hospital and St Charles. The teaching fellow significantly supports the student experience of Psychiatry and attainment of learning outcomes as highlighted within their curriculum.

ICSM is currently in the process of reviewing its curriculum and significant changes have taken place in Years 1 and 2, with ongoing changes planned as the current cohort progresses to Year 5 (in summer 2023) and beyond. These changes include introduction of Psychiatry teaching into the curriculum as early as Year 1 of the MBBS course.

Specific teaching responsibilities include the following:
  • Facilitate the Year 5 introductory lecture programme at the start of each rotation to a cohort of approximately 50 students (currently primarily delivered digitally).
  • Support the Year 5 Course Leader (Psychiatry) to ensure the smooth running of the lecture programme (currently delivered digitally).
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate the lecture programme.
  • Deliver teaching on a variety of topics that is clinically focused, stimulates interest in Psychiatry and supports students to meet learning outcomes as highlighted within their curriculum.
  • Explore new and innovative techniques / teaching methods to deliver the curriculum digitally.
  • Develop formative assessments within CNWL by leading on the provision of centralised mock-PACES (clinical exam) sessions (currently facilitated digitally).
  • Host revision lectures (all students) and exam practice sessions (usually students taking re-sit exams).
  • Proactively support the setting of both written and clinical exams for Year 5 (participate in question writing and PACES station piloting).
  • Facilitate sessions on Ethics (during each rotation).
  • Support the development of the curriculum as Psychiatry is introduced into earlier years.
  • Develop teaching material and deliver lectures to students accessing the new curriculum and gaining experience of Psychiatry from Years 1 to 6 of the course.
  • Provide support to ST4-6 undergraduate champions and other trainees engaged in teaching.
  • Facilitate a weekly Balint group session for students (currently facilitated digitally) and engage in the supervision provided for this.
  • Provide academic support / mentoring to students experiencing welfare / health difficulties, engaging other relevant individuals such as relevant Trust staff, Head of Year 5, Year 5 Programme Administrator and personal tutors.
  • Provide support and training to core trainees engaged in teaching.
  • Develop e-learning resources hosted on the student intranet (MedLearn).
  • Attend and contribute to CNWL's medical education group (MEG), which has oversight of all ICSM-related undergraduate activities within CNWL.
