We have a Health and Justice Services Directorate, within which sits the ‘Children and Young People’ Service line working in partnership with ‘Youth Custody Service’ colleagues to provide trauma-informed primary care, mental health, neuro-developmental and substance misuse services to the young people and young adults within our care.
It is our quest to deliver patient-focused, developmentally appropriate, quality care; promoting a trauma informed environment together with our operational colleagues and supporting young people and young adults to understand their own health and wellbeing needs and maximise all opportunities to achieve their goals during their stay and beyond.
We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Art Therapistto join ourIntegrated Healthcare Serviceat HMPYOI Feltham. Feltham is effectively two separate establishments delivering healthcare services to young people in Feltham A (15-19 years) and young adults in Feltham B (18-25 years).These two cohorts have slightly different needs and we are looking for staff that understand this and work in line with ‘Child First’ principles. By joining our team, you will not only look after the healthcare needs of the young people we care for, but also have the opportunity to have a real impact on promoting health and well-being for this population.
The art therapy service will include doing systematic assessment, treatment and evaluation of individual and group work, using art therapy and Mentalisation Based Art Therapy.
The post holder will be an experienced art therapist who can show experience of doing systematic assessment, treatment and evaluation of individual and group work, using art therapy and Mentalisation Based Art Therapy. He/She will support the team in different ways such as triage, completing CHATS, Sleep path and so on to help Wellbeing Team to achieve a targeted and appropriate service, delivered in accordance with evidence-based practice and local policies and procedures.
The post holder will proactively manage and lead A-side Wellbeing Team to further develop services, which are trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate. The post holder will have a key role in implementing the prison wide health promotion strategy and ‘Positive Health Programme’, as well as working as part of the wider framework for integrated care (SECURE STAIRS).
The post holder will work closely with the Clinical leads and Service manager to develop and implement an effective Wellbeing Strategy for HMYOI Feltham which meets the needs of the young people/young adults in our care.

2. Substantial post registration experience in an acute setting (Child)
3. Resident in UK for 3 years or longer

The Band 7 Art Therapist at HMYOI Feltham will be a vital member of the SECURE STAIRS Health and Wellbeing (CAMHS) Team and will be accountable, for the planning and provision of Art Therapy for young people at HMYOI Feltham. The postholder will assess referred young people with respect to planning specialist treatment including outpatient follow-up if appropriate, taking into account complexity of presentation, client need, risk factors and service priorities. The postholder will contribute specialist knowledge from arts therapy assessment and treatment to the overall care plan for each patient through contribution to clinical meetings and documented summaries, in liaison with prison-based services and community services. The postholder will contribute their own expertise in proposing changes to help shape the service provided by the SECURE STAIRS Health and Wellbeing (CAMHS) Team.
In the context of the development of the SECURE STAIRS framework at HMYOI Feltham, the Band 7 Art Therapist would be expected to contribute to the development of the initiative by taking the lead in developing the SECURE STAIRS framework on a given unit or units, helping the staff understand and embrace this trauma-informed model of working and implementing activities core to the model (unit-based therapeutic groups and projects; community meetings, reflective practice groups for staff; multi-disciplinary formulation; training for prison officers in therapeutic skills and concepts; helping to develop a more therapeutic environment in the custodial setting). This more generic work would be undertaken alongside core art therapy activities
The post-holder will primarily be based at Feltham, working with young people and custodial staff.
