(Senior) Environmental Health Housing Officers (Permanent and Fixed-Term roles)

This is an exciting time to work in Bristol’s Private Housing Service and you will be part of a team that improves the lives of privately rented tenants in the city.

Bristol is a vibrant city, with a high number of privately owned and rented properties. We have established a number of area-based property licensing schemes, in addition to the city-wide mandatory licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation.

A large proportion of our work involves tackling poor conditions and unsatisfactory management in licensed properties. However the service also inspects a significant number of properties that do not require a licence, taking reactive and targeted action in line with our enforcement policy objectives. We are also focussed on improving fire safety in high-rise buildings, using the powers now available to the Council.

Bristol is a great place for experienced officers to exercise their skills and for newly qualified officers to develop their proficiency. The full range of legal powers are used and officers are given every support in taking legal action to ensure compliance.

A competence-based grading system rewards well experienced officers for their expertise and supports newly qualified officers in developing their careers.
You will be offered a point on the pay scale on factors including your experience and level of qualification.
Once in post you can progress to the top of the scale through annual increments and assessed levels of competency.
More information on the grading structure can be found in the job paperwork.

You will be placed in one of the following teams depending on their experience and the requirements of the service: high-rise fire safety, licensing inspections; licensing enforcement; complaints. There may be opportunities in the future to work in different teams.

Why Bristol City Council?

At Bristol City Council, we go that extra mile for our people; we offer a work environment which is fast moving and supportive, giving you the chance to use your skills and develop new ones within a high-profile organisation. For the majority of our roles, hybrid working arrangements are available, giving teams the opportunity to work in a way that suits them, balancing service need and individual choice - mixing both home and office working.

Join us and you’ll receive an excellent rewards package including flexible working and flexitime, membership of the Local Government Pension scheme, and a generous annual leave allowance. In addition, you’ll be working in a supportive environment where you’ll have the chance to make Bristol a better place and contribute to its future.

How to apply

If you share our values and are ready to be part of our exciting journey please select the apply button below.

To be shortlisted for interview, you’ll need to demonstrate how you meet each of the essential criteria in the Person Specification within the Further Information section of your application. On occasion we will receive high numbers of applications, we may then shortlist against the desirable criteria along with the essential criteria, so if you can, please demonstrate how you meet this in your application.

For permanent Bristol City Council employees, fixed-term roles will be a secondment. For employees who are currently on a fixed-term contract with Bristol City Council, the secondment must not extend beyond the end of the fixed-term period to ensure there is a substantive post to return to.

If you are currently a casual worker or a member of an employment agency (currently working with Bristol City Council) this post will be a fixed-term contract.

Applications are welcomed from both EHOs with little or no experience and those with experience.

Contact Jonathan Mallinson or Paul Tregale for an informal discussion about the roles on: 0117 3525010 or email: private.housing@bristol.gov.uk

At Bristol City Council, we value having a workforce as diverse as the city we serve. We therefore welcome, develop and promote people from all sections of the community. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates who are currently under-represented within this Service of Bristol City Council. Appointments will be made on merit.
