About the Australian Federal Police (AFP)

The AFP's role is to enforce Commonwealth criminal law and to protect Commonwealth and national interests from crime in Australia and overseas. The AFP is Australia's international law enforcement and policing representative, and the Government's chief source of advice on policing issues.

The AFP works closely with a range of other law enforcement bodies at state, territory, Commonwealth and international levels, enhancing safety and providing a secure regional and global environment.


About the Position

The Executive Support Officer to the AFP Commander Europe, Africa and Middle East (CEAME) is responsible for the overall management of the AFP office and is responsible for representing CEAME’s interests. Activities include liaising with contacts, undertaking research projects, arranging travel for AFP members at Post as well as select international visitors, coordinating representational events and preparing correspondence and reports. The Executive Support Officer also manages official reimbursements for CEAME in line with financial management guidelines.


The successful candidate must have, or to be able to obtain, an Australian National Security Clearance to NV2. Therefore, Australian citizenship is mandatory.


The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide high level administrative support to the CEAME office, including management of the CEAME schedule of appointments, travel (Accommodation, flights and acquittals) and representational activities, incoming and outgoing correspondence, and handling telephone and email enquiries
  • Assist CEAME with coordination across all sections of the Management Branch and liaise with High Commission staff at all levels, members of the public, law enforcement and government agencies, and visitors to the Australian High Commission
  • Undertake general office management, including financial management (e.g. office expenditure acquittals) and manage petty cash reimbursements, as well as keep track of and maintain filing systems, financial records, key contacts and other auditable documents
  • Administrator level support for the Parliamentary Documentary Management System (PDMS), ensuring paper and electronic file creation meets agency guidelines.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports, including emails and letters, on routine and more complex matters on behalf of CEAME
  • Assisting with the co-ordination, set-up and catering for meetings and AFP events
  • Undertake complex research and analytical taskings as required by CEAME, which may include engagement with internal and external stakeholders on policy and legal issues
  • Preparation of speeches and presentations for CEAME
  • Assist with AFP related projects as directed

Qualifications/Experience

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise a busy workload
  • High level of experience undertaking research
  • Excellent English skills, both in oral and written communication
  • Ability to exercise discretion when required
  • Ability to arrange and prioritise meeting schedules for internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to arrange accommodation and restaurant bookings for official purposes and to liaise with catering companies as required
  • Good IT skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite

General Requirements

  • Australian NV Level 2 security clearance, or ability to gain the same
  • Working knowledge of the AFP and the law enforcement environment
  • Working knowledge of AFP electronic systems, governance and security framework
  • Knowledge of websites for accommodation and restaurant booking, catering companies
