The Opportunity

Arup's global reach and keen insight into the entire water cycle, and our practical experience in contrasting climates and conditions, brings oversight to our work in water – including infrastructure design and engineering, asset management, flood mitigation, sustainable water management, water strategies and research. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. We are an employee owned organisation which allows our members a unique opportunity to have a real say in our companies’ future and development.

Our global hydrogeology expertise underpins Arup's project work, from design of buildings and infrastructure to consulting advice for city resilience. We advise on projects in the realms of water, energy, road & rail, highways, aviation, dams, mining, reservoirs, tunnels & underground spaces, flood mitigation and sustainable water management strategies.

We are currently seeking a Hydrogeologist to join our specialist team of groundwater practitioners located in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The team is responsible for hydrogeological input to a portfolio of exciting, varied and multi-disciplinary projects and for groundwater-specific projects covering groundwater resources and supply, groundwater engineering, environmental impact assessment, contamination and geothermal engineering both in the UK and internationally.

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of our design teams, you will also work alongside experts in other Arup disciplines. With support you will get the opportunity to work on projects across the UK and overseas from time to time.

Is this role right for you?

We’re looking for a hydrogeolgist with curiosity, personal drive and strong technical know-how and an enthusiasm for problem-solving.

Typical activities for the role will include:

  • Groundwater resources and supply investigations including borehole performance assessment, borehole feasibility studies and design and supervision of borehole supplies;
  • Groundwater quality catchment investigations, for example studies characterising catchment hydrochemistry and water quality, to inform land management activities;
  • Climate change and resilience, investigation and understanding of climate and groundwater system response;
  • Hydrogeological ground investigations, including conducting and analysing hydrogeological pumping tests and environmental monitoring;
  • Groundwater modelling including groundwater flow and contaminant modelling for engineering, resources and risk assessment purposes;
  • Hydrogeological impact assessment and mitigation for new developments and engineering proposals;
  • Project management and working within larger project teams, with responsibility for production of deliverables to agreed timelines and budgets;

This is a great opportunity to further develop technical and business skills in a stimulating and supportive environment, working with a diverse and experienced team.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Degree qualified in Geology, MSc or equivalent preferred. The ideal candidate will have a higher degree in Hydrogeology, although consideration may be given to holders of a degree or higher degree in other subjects providing you have relevant experience in hydrogeology.
  • 2 - 8 years post graduate experience that has developed a good understanding and knowledge in this field.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Enthusiasm and experience in the field of hydrogeology gained on projects.
  • You will be an inquisitive, creative, solution-orientated designer.
  • Have an awareness and willingness to develop understanding of infrastructure and development projects beyond your own discipline.
  • Ability to work under pressure, balance priorities, and meet strict deadlines is essential.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to communicate through sketching, drawing, presentations, and in writing.
  • Willingness to develop commercial awareness and acumen, in addition to technical design skills.
  • Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges.
