Job Description


AECOM is recruiting for Principal Engineer to join our UK Transmission and Distribution (T&D) department.

Our UK&I T&D team is spread across Aberdeen, Ashford, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Croydon, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Plymouth, St Albans. If you are not located near a main office, we will consider a remote-working arrangement.

Our T&D team delivers HV design for electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltage levels. The focus of this role is primary plant design for large-scale infrastructure, grid connections, and private networks at voltage levels normally between 132kV to 400kV. Typical projects include feasibility, optioneering, FEED, detailed design and design assurance on existing or brand-new substations and other infrastructure.

  • Experience designing the HV substations (indoor/outdoor) across the full project lifecycle from feasibility to detailed design (in some cases until preparing construction packages).
  • Sound understanding of electrical plant items operation and controls and associated systems such as power and auto transformers, reactors, STATCOMs, AIS/GIS switchgears, HVDC systems (optional), interconnectors, HV Protection & Control.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of different utility standards and other applicable international standards in field of power engineering.
  • Design of HV/EHV substations this includes preparing drawings such as substation overall site layouts including but not limited to AIS/GIS yard/building design, protection and control room/building design and MV room/yard design, transformer/reactor’s yards design etc.
  • Optioneering exercise to select the best substation configuration (voltage levels, installed and firm capacities) as per functional requirements of project.
  • HV/EHV GIS and AIS switchgear’s design.
  • HV/EHV cable sealing end compound design.
  • Detailed level substation engineering calculations such as transformer sizing, bus bar sizing, breaker sizing, earthing design & calculations, lightning protection risk assessment and shielding design, transformer neutral treatment selection, AC/DC load estimation and equipment sizing, lighting and small power design, battery sizing, backup power demand for substation’s LV AC/DC loads and other auxiliary/essential loads.
  • HV, MV and LV Cable routing along with cable’s ampacity verification in engineering software for different cable installation conditions within the substation.
  • Good understanding in substations protection and control design work including preparing protection schedules, panel layouts, AC & DC Schematics, Logic Diagrams, mapping tables and protection settings
  • Previous experience to perform load flow, short circuit analysis on transmission level projects.
  • Pro-efficient in use of CDEGS, CYME/CYMCAP and ETAP/Power Factor or similar.
  • Previous design/engineering experience (preferably) with engineering consultants, EPC contractor, OEMs or (even with) utilities in the energy & renewables sector.
  • On hands practical experience in different design stages such as concept/feasibility, FEED design, Detailed Design, Construction Support, owner’s engineer etc.

Qualifications


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience in Middle East on delivery of major transmission and distribution infrastructure projects.
  • Previous experience to write technical reports, basis of design documents, proposal scope, estimate manhours and cost estimates for different engineering resources for all design stages.
  • Previous experience to write technical equipment of all major equipment of transmission substation
  • Previous experience to prepare material take off for transmission substation projects
  • Previous experience in Hazard analysis and knowledge of safety in design procedures for transmission substation projects.
  • Design Assurance - Reviewing of supplier technical designs.
  • Manufacturing assurance audits that manufacturing is following technical design, attending FAT. Commissioning support - Fault resolution support
